Adult Battle of the Books 2018 Rules of Play

Round #1
Round #1 will consist of 30 questions with a 1-hour time limit. At the end of the round, the two teams with the highest total score will move on to the Championship Round.

At the start of Round #1, each team will select chips from the chip bowl until a total of 50 chips have been drawn. Each chip is numbered and refers to a corresponding question about one or more of the five Battle Books. The selected questions will be asked to all teams in random order. Each question will be read twice and displayed on a screen during deliberations.
Each team has 60 seconds to discuss and write an answer. Each correct answer is worth 1 point. Incorrect answers have no value. There is no partial credit for partially correct answers. Official judges will evaluate answers and award points based upon that evaluation. This evaluation is final. Failure to completely write an answer in the allotted time will result in forfeiture of the point. Written answers must be legible.
At the conclusion of Round #1, first- and second-place teams will be identified. In the case of a tie, teams tied for either first or second place will compete in a written sudden-death face off. In this situation, each question is worth one point. Teams will have the opportunity to correctly answer tiebreak questions. The round will continue until one team achieves a one-point advantage.

The Championship Round

The two top-scoring teams will advance to the Championship Round. It will consist of 20 questions. Each team will pick 10 chips from the chip bowl. These chips will determine which questions their team will be asked. Teams will answer orally within 60 seconds. Each correct answer is worth 5 points. There is no partial credit for partially correct answers. If a team fails to supply a correct answer, the other team will have an opportunity to steal the question. They will have 60 seconds to provide an answer. A stolen question answered correctly is worth 3 points.
At the conclusion of this 20-question championship round, first- and second-place teams will be named. First and second place will be determined by each team’s number of points. In the case of a tie, a sudden-death tie break will again be played. The rules for a sudden death tie break are the same as in the previous round.
