City of Midland to Launch Traffic Control Study on Downtown Intersections

October 21, 2016 – The City of Midland has announced plans to conduct a traffic control study on three downtown intersections to collect data as a part of its downtown streetscape redevelopment process. During the study, All-Way Stop Control (AWSC) will be implemented at the intersections of Main Street and McDonald Street, Ashman Street, and Rodd Street. During the study, the intersections will be monitored and a variety of metrics will be collected, including volume, safety, and overall traffic flow. Traffic conditions for drivers and pedestrians in downtown Midland will then be evaluated.

Beginning on Tuesday, November 1, traffic signals in place at each intersection will display a flashing red signal and all sides of each intersection will be signed with stop signs. The left turn lanes on Main Street will be blocked off using construction barrels.

After approximately one week, the traffic signals will be shut off and covered and the intersections will be controlled by stop signs. In addition, Main Street approaching each intersection will be restriped to remove left turn lanes.

A public engagement topic on the City’s E-CityHall platform will also be used to collect additional feedback from residents. A definitive launch date for the survey will be announced once the traffic control study is underway.
