Battle of the Books Kicks off Saturday, November 12

November 4, 2016 – The Battle of the Books Kickoff of the 2016-2017 season will be held in the Grace A. Dow Memorial Library Auditorium on Saturday, November 12. The kickoff features a presentation by Newbery Honor winner Kirby Larson, author of last year’s Battle book, Duke. The twenty titles on the Battle list will be revealed at the end of the program.

Kirby Larson will speak at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. There will be an opportunity to meet the author at the book signing following the presentation. Barnes and Noble will be selling the author’s books, along with all of the books on the Battle list, after both of the programs.

Battle books will also be available for check out immediately after the 10 a.m. program in the Youth Services Area. Battle books will be available for general checkout after 3 p.m. on November 12. Books and book lists will not be available between programs.

Battle of the Books is a program designed to encourage and reward fourth and fifth grade readers. The program runs from kickoff in November through the final battle in early March. Participants read from a list of twenty books, and then compete in battles beginning in February over the books on the Battle list. The team registration deadline is January 17.

For more information about Battle of the Books or the kickoff event, contact Youth Services at 989-837-3466 or visit the library’s website at www.cityofmidlandmi.gov/library.
