Monthly Recycling Collection

GFL Environmental Inc is the City of Midland's New Recycling Contractor!

On July 1, 2023 GFL Environmental Inc will become the City of Midland's new recycling contractor.

GFL will start delivering new black & green carts to residents on Monday, June 5 starting with week 1 recycling. Residents don't need to be home to get their new cart.

Residents are asked to keep their brown recycling cart out at the curb after their June collection day so Republic Services can pick it up. Brown carts will be collected shortly after your June collection date.

The City of Midland offers recycling collection once per month for residential customers. Collection occurs on the same day as refuse collection each month during the same week of the month beginning on the first Monday of the month. (For example, a customer with Thursday Week 3 recycling collection will receive collection on Thursday every month during the 3rd full week of the month.) Recycling is provided to City residents by Republic Services.

Residents should place all recyclables loosely - not in bags - into their brown 95-gallon recycling bin and set the bin at the curb by 7:30 a.m. on their collection day. Please leave at least 3 feet of space between your recycling bin and your refuse bin, heavy item or brush, yard waste bin, or any other item set out for collection.

Know What to Throw: Introducing the "What Goes Where" Tool

A new digital tool from Recycle Coach designed for City of Midland recycling customers will help you easily find the proper disposal instructions for over 10,000 common household items.

Watch the video above to learn more about the "What Goes Where" search tool, then get started searching for items in the app below!

Collection Schedule

View the collection schedule and then place recycling at the curb by 7:30 a.m. on your collection day and no sooner than 6 p.m. on the day before collection. Recycling is collected once a month on the same day as your refuse collection. Recycling carts should be placed with the handle facing your home. Allow at least a four foot space around your cart for the automated arm of the truck to access your cart.

Changes to the Curbside Recycling Program

In 2010, the City of Midland began a fully automated, single stream recycling program for residents. This program allows for a wider variety of recyclables that can be collected at the curb. See below for an expanded list of acceptable collectibles. Simply place your recyclables in the cart. No need to bag or sort. Remember to rinse out all food residues from containers.

Contracted Service

Republic Waste Services, the City’s contracted service provider for recycling collection, has provided each resident with a brown, 95-gallon cart. These carts are owned by Republic. Please note that the brown 95-gallon carts may only be used for curbside recycling.

If a resident moves from their current address, the cart should remain at the initial delivery location. If you would like additional brown carts (3 carts maximum per address), they are available for lease through Republic Waste Services at a cost of $36 per year per cart. For more information on leasing additional brown carts, contact the Department of Public Services at 989-837-6900.

Items to be Collected

Please review Republic Services’ guidelines (PDF) for a list of recyclable items. Do not bag or sort your recycling. Do not bag or tie newspaper. Simply place your recyclables loose in the cart. Rinse out all food residue from containers.

All boxboard and cardboard must fit loosely inside the cart.  Cardboard and boxes placed outside the cart cannot be collected unless they fit loosely inside the cart as the driver has no way to collect these items using the automated arm of the truck. Place oversized cardboard out for the monthly Heavy Item Collection.

Proper Use of Your New Cart

Please review the Proper Use of New Carts Guide (PDF) for instruction on how to properly maneuver your brown recycle cart.
