At the Monday, May 20, 2019 meeting of City Council, Council approved a contract between the City and Saginaw-based J.R. Heineman & Sons to make the necessary repairs to reopen the Currie Bridge to vehicular traffic. A start date for repairs will be announced following our pre-construction meeting with the contractor next week, with an estimated completion date in July 2019.
The bridge has been closed since November 2018 after an overweight vehicle was observed crossing the bridge. Further inspection indicated that this vehicle, combined with excessive traffic use due to construction on the Karl B. Robertson (M-20) Bridge, caused damages to the Currie Bridge that made it unsafe for vehicles to cross. A large portion of the repairs will be funded through a private settlement with the overweight vehicle's insurance company, with the balance coming from the City's Local Streets Fund.
