[ARCHIVED] City of Midland Notice to Public on Sanitary Sewer Overflow

May 16, 2017  The City of Midland Wastewater Plant has notified the public of a sanitary sewer overflow event that occurred over Mother’s Day weekend.

On Sunday, May 14, a leak in a sanitary sewer force main located at the M-20 bridge in Midland resulted in the discharge of approximately 87,000 gallons of untreated sewage into the Tittabawassee River. Upon being notified, Wastewater Treatment Plant staff successfully completed a repair to fix the leak and prevent additional overflow.

In accordance with state law, the Michigan Department of Environment Quality and the Midland County Health Department (MCHD) were notified immediately upon discovery of the leak.

“Based on available information, the Midland County Health Department does not believe this sewage discharge will have any appreciable impact to the water quality of the Tittabawasee River,” said MCHD Director/Health Officer Mike Krecek. “As a precautionary step, we are conducting bacteriological sampling both upstream and downstream of the spill.”
