[ARCHIVED] "Modern Explorers" Lecture Series Launches at Library

September 15, 2017 - The Grace A. Dow Memorial Library is embracing Midland’s place as the City of Modern Explorers in its latest free lecture series! This fall’s series, entitled “Modern Explorers” focuses on the quest to know more about the frontiers of our world today and will take guests to the edge of discovery on a variety of topics.

On Thursday, October 5, Great Lakes underwater diver and historian Ric Mixter will present “The Edmund Fitzgerald Investigations.” Ric has written, produced or served as an expert on more than 30 programs on shipwrecks for PBS, Discovery Channel, and the History Channel. He has dived and videotaped more than 100 shipwrecks, including the Edmund Fitzgerald. Listen along as Ric shares his own exciting underwater video, interviews, and stories of his exploration of Lake Superior’s most famous wreck.

Dr. Leonard Fleck, from the Michigan State University Center for Ethics and Humanities in the Life Sciences, will be joining us on Thursday, November 2 to share his insights on several controversial issues in his presentation, “Genetics, Ethics, and the Future of Human Reproduction.” Dr. Fleck will discuss how the field of human genetics has been progressing rapidly, often ahead of a thorough investigation into the moral and ethical implications of new genetic technologies such as cloning and genetic engineering.

All programs in the “Modern Explorers” series take place in the Library Auditorium at 7:00 p.m. All events are free and open to the public. For questions, please call the Grace A. Dow Library Reference Desk at 989-837-3449 or visit www.cityofmidlandmi.gov/library.
