[ARCHIVED] Reminders on Election Sign Placement

July 3, 2014 – With the August 5 Primary Election only a month away, the City of Midland would like to remind citizens of regulations regarding election sign placement.
• Election signs may be placed on private property only.
• Signs may not be placed in the public right-of-way (the area between the sidewalk and curb, and all roadways), or on City property, such as parks, City-owned lots, and other property.
• Election signs on residential property may be a maximum total size of 32 square feet with a maximum height of five feet.
• Permits are not required for election signs.
• Before placing any signs on private property other than your own, you must get the property owner’s permission.
• At intersection corners, signs must be placed no closer than 20 feet from the sign to the sidewalk’s edge to avoid visual obstruction. If there is no sidewalk at an intersection corner, signs must be placed at least 35 feet from the curb.
• Political signs must be removed by Tuesday, August 19 or 14 days after the election.

These rules will be in effect for the November General Election as well.

Signs in violation of Article 8 of the City’s zoning ordinance will be removed and available for pick-up at Midland City Hall.

A civil infraction citation may be issued for any violations of the above requirements. First offenses result in a $50 fine; the second offense would be a $250 fine; and the third and subsequent offenses would cost $500 for each day that signs are in violation of the City ordinance.

For more information, contact the City Building Department at 989-837-3383.
