Apply Now for 2018 Citizens Academy

November 17, 2017 – If you’ve ever wondered how your tax dollars are put to use or what it takes to run a municipal government, then Midland’s Citizens Academy is perfect for you!

The City of Midland is currently accepting applications for its 2018 Citizens Academy, a free 10-week course designed to give residents an up-close and personal look at how local government functions and helps shape our community.

During the academy, participants attend weekly 2-hour sessions that explore different functional areas of City government and learn about how their roles impact daily life for residents of Midland. For many sessions, participants will also receive a “behind-the-scenes” tour of the location they visit, including the Law Enforcement Center, Midland County Jail, the Midland Water Plant, and more. Representatives from Midland Tomorrow, Midland County Government, and the Midland County Historical Society also join the class to share information about how their organizations impact the Midland community.

Sessions for the 2018 academy will take place on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-8:30 p.m. from January 10 to March 14 and will be held at various municipal facilities. Midland residency is not required to participate; however, space is limited, so if there are more applicants than available spaces, first preference will be given to residents within the city.

Applications for the 2018 Citizens Academy will be accepted through Friday, December 15 at 5 p.m. and can be found online at www.cityofmidlandmi.gov/citizensacademy or at the Grace A. Dow Memorial Library reference desk or the City Hall information desk. Participants selected for the 2018 academy will be notified by December 29, 2017.

For questions or further information about the academy, visit www.cityofmidlandmi.gov/citizensacademy or contact the City Communications Department at 837-3307.
