[ARCHIVED] Available Positions on Boards and Commissions - Apps Due April 27

April 13, 2018 – City residents interested in the Midland community: get involved!  The City is accepting applications to fill positions on various City boards and commissions.

Applications will be accepted until 5 p.m. on Friday, April 27, 2018.  Forms are located on the City of Midland website at www.cityofmidlandmi.gov/boardscommissions under the respective board or commission or in hard copy form through the City Manager’s Office at 333 W. Ellsworth St.

Boards and commissions advise the City of Midland on issues important to the municipality. Most positions do not require extensive expertise, just a willingness to serve.

Applicants must be city residents.  All those who have previously applied for a board or commission vacancy are asked to submit a new application.

Positions that are currently open are included below:

Aviation Advisory Commission
• One citizen-at-large position with a term expiring June 30, 2018
The Aviation Advisory Commission advises the City Council on user charges and other aviation costs affecting the use and development of Jack Barstow Municipal Airport, which is the City of Midland's general aviation airport. The commission also advises the City Council on airport development plans including runways, hangars, building construction and other improvements. This commission meets bi-monthly.

Cable Access Advisory Commission
• One MCTV access user position with a term expiring June 30, 2018
The Cable Access Advisory Commission advises the City Council regarding general policy matters related to the services provided to public access producers and viewers through MCTV.  The commission is also responsible for encouraging the use of public access channels and gaining public input.  This commission meets quarterly.

Center City Authority Board
• One resident position with a term expiring June 30, 2018
The Center City Authority Board is responsible for ongoing analysis, short- and long-term planning, marketing, event coordination, promotion and the construction, rehabilitation, preservation and reconstruction of buildings and facilities within the Center City district. This board meets monthly.

Dial-A-Ride Advisory Commission
• One citizen-at-large position with a term expiring June 30, 2018
• One citizen-at-large position with a term expiring June 30, 2020
The Dial-A-Ride Advisory Commission assists the City Council in addressing the full range of public transportation issues including fare policies and structures, services and programs to meet the needs of all disabled persons and persons 65 years of age or older and other relevant ordinances, rules and administrative requirements.

Downtown Development Authority Board
• One vacant position with a term expiring May 1, 2021
The Downtown Development Authority (DDA) was created to prevent deterioration in business districts, to create and implement development plans, to issue bonds, and to utilize tax increment financing for the Downtown district. This board meets monthly.

International Fire Code Board of Appeals
• One code professional position with a term expiring June 30, 2018
The International Fire Code Board of Appeals hears and decides appeals of orders, decisions, or determinations made by the Fire Marshal relative to the application and interpretation of International Fire Code. The board of appeals is appointed by the Fire Chief. The board meets as necessary and does not hold regularly scheduled meetings.

Library Board
• One citizen-at-large position with a term expiring June 30, 2018.
The Library Board advises City Council regarding written library user policies, studies and provides recommendations to City Council on the development of library service plans, encourages the use of the library among residents of the service area, and other such functions as City Council may direct. This board meets bi-monthly.

Local Officers Compensation Commission
• One citizen-at-large position with a term expiring June 30, 2024.
The Local Officers Compensation Commission helps determine the salaries of Midland’s mayor and Midland City Council members.  The term for this commission’s members is seven years, but members only meet every other year. The applicant must be a registered voter in the City of Midland.

MBS International Airport Commission
• One citizen-at-large position with a term expiring June 30, 2018
The MBS International Airport Commission is the governing body of MBS International Airport.  The airport is owned by the City of Midland, Bay County, and the City of Saginaw.  Each owner is represented by three members, for a total number of nine MBS International Airport Commissioners.  This commission meets monthly.

West Main Street Historic District Commission
• One Midland County Historical Society representative position with a term expiring June 30, 2018
• Two (2) citizen-at-large positions with a term expiring June 30, 2018
This commission makes recommendations to the City Council on the development and administration of guidelines for all work on structures within the West Main Street Historic District.  This commission meets quarterly.

In May or early June, applicants for all boards and commissions openings mentioned above will be contacted about the possibility of interviewing with Midland City Council.
