[ARCHIVED] City Asks for Public Input on Community Development Block Grant Funds

Two people at a desk

November 30, 2018  The City of Midland invites residents to talk about their ideas for neighborhood enhancements, affordable housing needs, and other top priorities at one of two upcoming public input sessions discussing the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program.

Each year, the City receives CDBG funds from the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) to support activities that provide decent housing, establish and maintain a suitable living environment, and expand economic opportunities in the community, all primarily benefiting low- and very low-income residents of the city. To help allocate these funds in the best interest of the community, City Planning and Community Development asks residents for their feedback.

Public input sessions will be held on Thursday, December 13 from 5 – 6:30 p.m. and Friday, December 14 from 2 – 3:30 p.m. Both sessions will be held in the Council Overflow Conference Room at Midland City Hall, 333 W. Ellsworth Street, and are open to the public. There is no formal presentation and residents are invited to drop in at any time during each event.

The following topics will be open for discussion:

  • Neighborhood focus in Bay City Road corridor, Midtown, and near Downtown
  • Public facility improvements within identified neighborhoods
  • Housing rehabilitation for owner-occupied and renter-occupied residences
  • Sanitary sewer separation from roof/footing drains
  • Further initiatives for fair and nondiscriminatory housing practices
  • Affordable multi-family housing and senior-serving housing facilities

Information gathered during these sessions will be integrated into the final planning document to be submitted to HUD after a 30-day public review period in early Spring 2019.

Residents who are unable to attend the sessions are invited to share their feedback at by contacting the City Planning and Community Development Department via mail at 333 W. Ellsworth Street, Midland, MI 48640; via phone at 989-837-3374; or via email at nwilson@midland-mi.org.

The Community Development Block Grant program is an initiative of the US Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD). For more information on this program, please visit www.hud.gov/program_offices/comm_planning/communitydevelopment/programs.
