[ARCHIVED] Notice of Sanitary Sewer Overflow, April 16

April 17, 2019 – The City of Midland Wastewater Plant is notifying the public of a sanitary sewer overflow event that occurred on Tuesday, April 16.

On Tuesday, a blockage in a sanitary sewer pipe located under Austin Street near the Wastewater Treatment Plant resulted in the discharge of approximately 45 gallons of untreated sewage into the City's storm sewer system. Within 90 minutes of discovery, Wastewater Treatment Plant staff successfully removed the blockage and prevented additional overflow.

In accordance with state law, the Michigan Department of Environment Quality and the Midland County Health Department were notified immediately upon discovery of the leak. Bacteriological sampling of the Tittabawassee River both upstream and downstream of Midland may be conducted as a precautionary measure; however, staff are awaiting clarification to determine if this will be necessary at the time of this release.

For more information, contact the City of Midland Wastewater Treatment Plant at 989-837-3500.
