May 10, 2019 – The City of Midland Wastewater Plant is notifying the public of a sanitary sewer overflow event that occurred on Friday, May 10.
An equipment malfunction at one of the City’s sanitary sewer pumping stations resulted in the discharge of approximately 30,000 gallons of untreated sewage into the City's storm sewer system. Within 20 minutes of discovery, Wastewater Treatment Plant staff successfully eliminated the overflow.
In accordance with state law, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (formerly Department of Environmental Quality) and the Midland County Health Department were notified immediately upon discovery of the leak. Bacteriological sampling of the Tittabawassee River both upstream and downstream of Midland may be conducted as a precautionary measure; however, staff are awaiting clarification to determine if this will be necessary at the time of this release.
