September 20, 2019 – The City of Midland is pleased to announce that Peter Schwarz has been hired as the Director of Water Services.
Schwarz returns to the City of Midland after serving as the General Manager of the Saginaw-Midland Municipal Water Supply Corporation. He began his career with the City as a water treatment plant operator in 2004 and was promoted to operations supervisor in 2009 and water plant superintendent in 2014. Previously, Schwarz also worked as an environmental compliance analyst for the City of Flint and as a research assistant at Dow.
Schwarz holds an F-1 Drinking Water Treatment certification and an S-1 Drinking Water Distribution Systems certification from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Saginaw Valley State University. He is also a member of the Michigan Section of the American Water Works Association (MI-AWWA) and serves on the organization’s Education & Training Council.
“Peter’s extensive knowledge and water treatment experience have served as a valuable asset to our community and this region for many years,” said City Manager Brad Kaye. ”We are thrilled to have him rejoin the City in this new role.”
The Director of Water Services position was created following realignment of the City’s utilities departments in spring 2019. In this role, Schwarz will directly oversee operations and staff at the Midland Water Treatment Plant and the City’s Water Distribution and Water Billing departments, ensure regulatory compliance, and serves as a technical advisor to the City Manager and Midland City Council on utility and environmental issues.
