March 21, 2014 – The Parks and Recreation Department is proud to announce that the City of Midland Beautification Advisory Committee has received the Community Service Award from the Michigan Recreation and Park Association. The award recognizes individuals and groups who show outstanding support to public recreation and park programs in their community. Representatives from the Beautification Advisory Committee traveled to East Lansing this week to accept the award.
The Midland Beautification Advisory Committee was established in 1969 and has nine active members and an emeritus member. Each member spends over 30 hours per year on two specific work areas:
Make Midland Beautiful – This cooperative program between Midland public and parochial school art departments and the Beautification Advisory Committee helps increase awareness among young people (K-6) about what makes their community beautiful. The students express their thoughts by creating posters that are submitted to the committee for review. Over 800 students participate in the program each year. Select posters are honored during a City Council meeting in May.
Beautification Awards Program – This program was initiated in 1971 to create public awareness of positive visual improvements made by the community. The annual awards program is held in November and recognizes both residential and business properties in the categories of structural site improvement and landscaping accomplishments. Additional categories include Special Recognition and The Bette R. Tollar Civic Commitment Award.
