[ARCHIVED] "Hotspots of the World" Lecture on Syria November 14

November 1, 2019 – The Grace A. Dow Memorial Library continues its exploration of world conflict in its Fall Lecture Series “Hotspots of the World” on Thursday, November 14 at 7 p.m. with a lecture on the past and current issues in Syria.

With global players such as Russia, Turkey, Iran, and the United States all having interests in the area, it is often hard to understand the real issues with the ongoing civil war in Syria. Recent changes in the political and military landscape are also contributing to unrest in the area. As these rivalries play out, the Syrian people have lost 500,000 citizens with five million more being displaced and requiring humanitarian assistance.

Political science professor Dr. Gamal Gasim of Grand Valley State University explore the current climate in Syria, focusing not only on its internal conflicts, but also the broader context of this crisis on the entire Middle East.

The lecture series will conclude with a presentation on Venezuela on December 5.

All events in the Fall Lecture Series are free and open to the public and are held in the Auditorium of the Grace A. Dow Memorial Library.

For more information about this and other events, call the Reference Desk at 989-837-3449 or visit www.cityofmidlandmi.gov/library. The Grace A. Dow Memorial Library is located at 1710 W. St. Andrews Rd and is a service of the City of Midland.
