[ARCHIVED] Midland Firefighters Go “Pink” for Cancer Cause

October 3, 2014 – Midland firefighters will be going “Passionately Pink for the Cure” for the month of October in an effort to raise awareness about breast cancer, support women who are currently battling cancer, and raise funds for the Midland County “Team Lifesavers” Relay for Life Team.

The “Passionately Pink for the Cure” program has been adopted by many fire departments across the country with positive results. This will be the second year Midland firefighters have decided to join in these fundraising efforts.

According to American Cancer Society estimates, approximately 232,340 women were diagnosed with invasive breast cancer and nearly 40,000 women died from this disease in 2013. It’s estimated that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer.

Except for skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer. This disease affects more of us than we realize; in fact, 2,240 men were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013.

To show support for the program, many Midland firefighters will be switching from their traditional navy blue uniform t-shirts to pink shirts (purchased individually by each firefighter) during the month of October.

Local firefighters have participated in the Midland County Relay For Life® for the last 10 years. A team of firefighters and family members started fundraising efforts in 2005 with a goal of raising $500. The team has grown over the years to include groups from surrounding Lee, Midland, and Homer township fire departments as well as the City of Midland Fire Department. Since 2005, the local team has raised more than $50,000.

The 2014 Relay for Life has officially ended, but if you would like to help in our efforts for the July 2015 Relay, please consider donating to "Team Lifesavers" at the following link: http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?pg=entry&fr_id=68042
