January 17, 2020 – Following the passage of Proposal 3 in November 2018, all registered voters in the State of Michigan are permitted to vote absentee in any election without providing a reason. Absentee voting allows voters to cast their ballots without visiting the polls on Election Day.
To vote by absentee ballot, voters must request and complete an absentee ballot application for each election in which you wish to vote absentee. Completed applications can be submitted in person or by mail to the Midland City Clerk’s Office, 333 W. Ellsworth Street, Midland, MI 48640; by fax to 989-835-2717; or via email to clerk@midland-mi.org. A request for absentee ballot form can be found at www.cityofmidlandmi.gov/absentee.
Voters who mail or email their applications will receive their absentee ballot by mail, while those who drop off their applications in person at City Hall may pick up and vote their ballots same day with a valid ID beginning in February 2020. Please note that only the individual voter may be in possession of his or her unvoted ballot. Unvoted ballots will not be given to family members, friends, or any other individual besides the voter to whom it is addressed.
Once completed, voted ballots can be returned to the City Clerk’s Office in person or by mail. All ballots must be received by 8 p.m. on Election Day in order to be counted. The City Clerk’s Office recommends allowing 2 weeks’ mailing time for returning voted ballots by mail.
Voters who wish to automatically receive an absentee ballot application for every election can join the City Clerk’s Office absentee voter list by calling 989-837-3310 or emailing a request to clerk@midland-mi.org. Joining this list will eliminate the need to request an application for each election, saving time and effort!
