December 7, 2020 – Park users, recreational aficionados, and the general public are invited to view a draft of the City of Midland’s updated five-year recreation plan before it goes to the Midland City Council for approval next month.

The plan, developed by the City’s Parks and Recreation Commission, evaluates existing recreation opportunities, reviews public opinion regarding parks and recreation, and proposes a five-year action plan for implementing proposed park improvements and new initiatives. Once approved, the plan will replace the existing Five-Year Recreation Plan that was implemented in February 2015.

The plan is required by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) to apply for MDNR park and recreation grant funding programs.

The draft recreation plan will be available for a 30-day public review process as required by the MDNR. Residents may review the plan in its entirety and submit feedback on the goals, objectives, and actions contained in the plan via the City’s E-CityHall public engagement platform by visiting www.cityofmidlandmi.gov/parksmasterplan or in person at the Midland Parks and Recreation Office, 4811 N. Saginaw Road, during regular business hours: Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Comments may also be submitted in writing to Midland City Hall, c/o Karen Murphy, 333 W. Ellsworth St., Midland, MI 48640 or via email to recreation@midland-mi.org. Comments will be collected through Monday, January 11, 2021, at 4 p.m.

A public hearing on the proposed plan will be held during a regular meeting of the Midland City Council on January 11, 2021 at 7 p.m. At this time, it is anticipated that this meeting will be held virtually via the Zoom video conference platform in accordance with current COVID-19 guidelines. The meeting location and agenda for this meeting will be posted on the City’s website at www.cityofmidlandmi.gov/agendacenter in advance of January 11.

For more information on the recreation plan, please contact the Department of Public Services at (989) 837-6909.
