[ARCHIVED] Midland Board of Review to Hear Property Assessment Appeals

February 28, 2014 – The Midland Board of Review will hear property assessment appeals, by appointment only, Monday, March 10 through Friday, March 14 at the City Assessor’s Office at Midland City Hall, 333 West Ellsworth Street.

In an effort to expedite your appeal and eliminate long waits to meet with the Board, appointments will be accepted for those who wish to appeal their property assessment in person. The meeting schedule is as follows:

  • Monday, March 10: 1 – 4:30 p.m. and 6 – 9 p.m.
  • Tuesday, March 11: 9 a.m. – Noon and 1:30 – 5 p.m.
  • Wednesday, March 12: 9 a.m. – Noon and 1:30 – 5 p.m.
  • Thursday, March 13: 9 – 11 a.m., 12:30 – 4:30 p.m., and 6 – 9 p.m.
  • Friday, March 14: 9 a.m. – Noon

The Board of Review will also accept applications for consideration of poverty exemptions. Applications are available at the City Assessor’s Office.

An appeal before the March 2014 Board of Review is required for further right of appeal to the Michigan Tax Tribunal. An appeal to the Tribunal will only be accepted if an appeal is first made to the local Board of Review. Beginning in 2007, commercial, industrial, developmental, and utility property may be appealed directly to the Tribunal without protest before the Board of Review, as provided for by P.A. 174 of 2006.

An appeal may be made in person or by letter, if received by the board no later than March 14, 2014. Residents who would like to make an appointment to speak with the Board or have questions about the 2014 Board of Review process may contact the City Assessor’s Office at 837-3334.

New this year: P.A. 402 of 2012 provides business personal property owners with an assessment of $40,000 or less an exemption from personal property taxes, if they qualify according to the act. At this time, those property owners must file a form 5076 and make an appeal to the March Board of Review for the exemption.
