[ARCHIVED] Library Offers Kits for Loved Ones with Memory Loss

July 2, 2021 – The Grace A. Dow Memorial Library is now offering help for families who have a loved one experiencing memory loss.  Library staff researched and consulted with experts to develop memory kits for patrons to check out and use when visiting with their special someone. While visits with those experiencing memory loss are sometimes strained and centered on the present, these kits can help create positive, enjoyable conversations of times past to assist in bringing up happy memories for everyone to enjoy.

Grace A. Dow Memorial Library’s Spark a Memory kits contain themed, multi-sensory items designed to initiate positive conversations and memories from the past. Items in most kits include DVDs of music and images, beautiful photo cards, memorabilia, and activity and conversation starter cards. Patrons are encouraged to try each item and determine for themselves what works best for their loved one.

Kits can be placed on hold by searching ‘Spark a Memory’ in the Library’s online catalog at www.gracedowlibrary.biblionix.com or can be found on display at the Library near the Reference Desk. The Library is opening for limited browsing Monday through Thursday beginning July 12. For more information and updated hours of operation, please visit www.gadml.org or call 989-837-3449.

The Grace A. Dow Memorial Library is located at 1710 W. St. Andrews Rd and is a service of the City of Midland. While the Library remains partially closed to the public due to damage sustained in the May 2020 flooding event, curbside material pick-up and Express Library limited in-person browsing are available. For more information or to learn more about the Library, visit www.gadml.org.
