February 9, 2015 - Calling all artists and creative minds! This is your invitation to participate in the 14th Summer Sculpture Series for Downtown Midland. This year's theme is "Bikes" – everything about bikes and cycling and all things made with bikes – let your imagination cycle through the possibilities!
Who can participate? Anyone with a great idea and the skills to create an amazing piece of bike art - sculptors, artists, welders, hobbyists, students, wood workers, mechanics, bicycle enthusiasts, metal workers, recyclers… if you love bikes and love art, please consider submitting an idea!
Think about bicycles, cycling, and movement… Maybe it’s gears, pedals, spokes, banana seats, wheels, handlebars, or the bicycle re-imagined. Take recycled bicycle parts and form them into a cool steampunk style bike… take apart a bike and reconfigure the pieces using wood, copper, stone, iron, and more… use colors – bright red, hazard yellow, vibrant orange, beautiful blue – to grab attention. Let your mind shift through the substance and structure of bicycles and make them into a sculpture of your design.
There is no cost to enter and if your sculpture is chosen, we will provide you with a small stipend (up to $500) to help cover your material costs. Sculptures will be displayed all summer long in Downtown Midland.
New this year – a Judge's Choice Award of $2,500 will be awarded to the overall best sculpture.
This is your chance to create a "biketacular sculpture!" So get your creative "wheels" turning, put your "pedal to the metal," and "gear" up for an amazing sculpture series. Deadline to apply is Friday, March 13 at 4 p.m.
For sculpture specifications, application form and more information visit www.downtownmidland.com.
Sponsorships are also available for businesses interested in sponsoring a sculpture. For questions or more information about the 2015 Bikes sponsorship information, contact the DDA Office at 989-837-3313 or stisdale@midland-mi.org.
Visitors to Downtown Midland can look forward to the arrival of downtown’s sculptures in early June. The sculptures will be available for purchase on September 17 at the annual sculpture auction. Proceeds benefit future sculpture series.
