August 10, 2021 – Today, the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded the City of Midland $5.5 million in federal funding to help the community recover from severe flooding experienced in May 2020.

Midland City Council has allocated this funding to assist with the following projects:

  • Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) – Property Buy-outs
  • HMGP Housing 1:1 Replacement
  • Riverside Place Flood Restoration
  • Sewer Improvement & Pump Station Flood Mitigation
  • City Modern Sustainability & Resiliency Planning
  • General Planning & Administration

These activities address high-priority unmet needs of low- and moderate-income residents within the community affected by the May 2020 dam failures and subsequent flooding event. Additionally, these allocations assist the City in long-term sustainability and resiliency efforts in the face of future flooding events and other natural disasters.

"These events impacted the lives of residents, derailed businesses, and even affected our municipal operations," said Midland Mayor Maureen Donker. "We’ve listened to the community to identify places where needs remain unmet, and, with these funds, we will improve infrastructure, address post-flood housing challenges, and become more sustainable and responsive to these events as we continue to grow and change as a community.”
