[ARCHIVED] Main Street Reopens, Pedestrian Plazas Close for 2021

November 3, 2021 – Main Street has reopened to motorized vehicle traffic and parking from Ashman Street to Rodd Street in Downtown Midland following a temporary closure this summer to provide expanded, socially-distanced shopping and dining space in The Commons Pedestrian Plazas.

The Commons refreshment area, a designated space bounded by Gordon, Rodd, Larkin, and Main streets, will remain open through January 6, 2022 at this time. Adults ages 21+ can purchase to-go alcoholic beverages from participating establishments and enjoy them anywhere outdoors within the space.

Last month, the City of Midland hosted a survey to collect community input on usage of the pedestrian plazas on its online public engagement platform, E-CityHall, which garnered over 580 responses. To view the results of this survey, please visit www.cityofmidlandmi.gov/pedplazas2021 and click on the “Feedback” tab.

“The COVID pandemic challenged us to ‘do downtown differently’, and in the past two years, The Commons pedestrian plazas and refreshment area have allowed us to do just that”, said Community Affairs Director Selina Tisdale. “As we look forward to 2022 and the future of our community, Downtown Midland will use what we’ve learned during the past 2 years and the constructive input of our residents, visitors, and businesses to explore how we can continue to make Downtown Midland a safe, lively place for all to enjoy.”
