July 1, 2022 – With Independence Day just around the corner, celebrations are sure to come with it. However, these celebrations can become dangerous when fireworks are not treated with safety and respect.
The Midland Fire Department offers the following safety tips for dealing with fireworks:
- Alcohol and fireworks do not mix.
- Do not allow children to play with or ignite fireworks.
- Fireworks packaged in brown paper is often a sign that the fireworks were made for professionals. They may pose a danger to consumers.
- Always have an adult supervise fireworks activities. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees.
- Sky lanterns are prohibited in the City of Midland. Please do not use them.
- Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.
- Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully.
- Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
- Keep a fire extinguisher or a garden hose handy in case of fire.
- Light fireworks one at a time.
- After fireworks complete their burning, submerge the spent device in a bucket of water to prevent a fire.
- Soak the area where fireworks will be shot with water prior to beginning your fireworks display to prevent fires.
Conditions are extremely dry in Midland County at this time. Extra care should be taken to prevent a grass or forest fire from occurring. Do not leave spent fireworks in a garage and soak them in a bucket of water before disposing of them properly, preferably in a metal trash can. Seek medical attention for injuries.
Residents should discuss all fireworks’ proper use with their fireworks vendor before using them if unsure how the fireworks should be used. Fireworks vendors are knowledgeable and can assist in figuring out their safe use.
