October 7, 2022 – With the 2022 General Election rapidly approaching, residents are reminded to note the City of Midland’s sign usage rules. Election signs – or any other temporary signage – placed in restricted areas may be removed and disposed of by City personnel.
Signs may not be posted in the right-of- way, which is the generally the area between the sidewalk and curb or the area within twenty-five (25) feet of the center of the roadway. The right-of-way area is a reserved strip of land which runs adjacent to other property and is often occupied by public utilities. While property owners are required to maintain the right-of-way area adjacent to their property, the City of Midland has authority over this area per Section 22-2 of the Code of Ordinances.
Residents are also reminded that signs cannot be placed on poles for traffic control devices, traffic signs, or utilities, even temporarily.
Regulations regarding sign placement have been necessary for two reasons: aesthetics and safety. Signs can be attractive and helpful in advertising a business, event, candidate, or cause; however, if used improperly, they can be distracting to motorists and a potential danger to the public as well as an eyesore in our community.
