[ARCHIVED] Spongy Moth Abatement Program Underway

May 23, 2023 – Now through Friday, May 26, small helicopter aircraft will be conducting flights over woodland areas throughout Midland County to treat for spongy moth (formerly “gypsy moth”) as part of the countywide spongy moth program. Most spraying will be done during morning hours when the air is cool and winds are minimal. The active chemical used in this program is safe for both humans and animals.

Residents are invited to watch the aircraft take off, land and load from the Midland Community Aviation Discovery Area (MCADA) at Jack Barstow Airport in Midland.

The MCADA is open to the public and offers visitors the ability to learn about all things aviation, including a comfortable viewing area for watching airplane takeoffs and landings and flight preparation activity, a real airplane on display, an aviation-themed educational area, and broadcasted radio communications from pilots available for public listening. There is also a covered pavilion with picnic tables and play areas for younger children.

The Midland County Spongy Moth Suppression Program began in 1986 in response to the massive defoliation of nearly one third of the entire County's forest cover. The program is funded through a millage approved by the residents of Midland County. It is managed through Midland County government via contractor Aquatic Consulting Services II LLC.  For more information, visit www.co.midland.mi.us/spongymoth.
