[ARCHIVED] MFD Issues Reminder of Recreational Fire Rules

Orange flames from a fire

June 8, 2023 – The Midland Fire Department has issued an educational statement in response to recent inquiries about recreational fires and burning in the Midland city limits.

Recreational fires are still permitted in the Midland city limits at this time; however, the Midland Fire Department (MFD) recommends that residents refrain from having these fires until conditions improve. Conditions are extremely dry and residents should exercise extreme caution if choosing to have a recreational fire on their property.

Recreational fires in the city limits must be conducted at least 25 feet from any existing structure, can be no more than three (3) feet wide and two (2) feet tall, and must be attended at all times . Only sticks, firewood, and charcoal are allowed to be burned in a recreational fire and a method to extinguish the fire (hose, water bucket, etc.) must be present at all times. Visit for a complete list of recreational fire rules.

At this time, open debris burning is not permitted anywhere in Midland County. This ban is in effect until further notice. Open debris burning is never permitted within the Midland city limits. Visit the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) burn permits website at for more information.

Should a Red Flag Warning be issued for Midland County by the National Weather Service, a no burning order be proclaimed by the Governor, or a countywide no burning order issued by Midland County, recreational fires will not be permitted within the city until those bans are lifted.

For more information, please contact the Midland Fire Department at 989-837-3410.
