Applications Now Open for 2024 Citizens Academy

Citizens Academy 2023

November 9, 2023 – What does it take to run a city of 42,000 people every day? Where do your tax dollars really go? Why does the City do this, or that, or something else? If you’ve ever asked these questions before, the City of Midland Citizens Academy is for you!

The City of Midland is currently accepting applications for its award-winning annual Citizens Academy, a free 10-week course designed to give residents an up-close and personal look at how local government functions and helps shape our community.

During the academy, participants attend weekly 2-hour sessions that explore different functional areas of City government and learn about how their roles impact daily life for residents of Midland. For many sessions, participants will also receive a “behind-the-scenes” tour of the location they visit, including the Law Enforcement Center, Midland County Jail, the Midland Water Treatment Plant, and more.

Sessions for the 2024 academy will take place on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. from January 10 through March 13, 2024 and will be held at various municipal facilities. Midland residency is not required to participate; however, space is limited, so if there are more applicants than available spaces, first preference will be given to residents who live in the city limits. Residents who have previously applied but were not accepted are encouraged to apply again!

Applications for the 2024 Citizens Academy will be accepted through Friday, December 8 at 5 p.m. and can be found online at www.cityofmidlandmi.gov/citizensacademy. Hard copies can be picked up at the Grace A. Dow Memorial Library reference desk or the City Hall information desk. Participants selected for the 2023 academy will be notified by December 15, 2023.

For questions or further information about the academy, visit www.cityofmidlandmi.gov/citizensacademy or contact Community Affairs at
 989-837-3307.
