City of Midland Building Inspector Steve Taglauer was recently elected by his peers to serve as director of the Code Officials Conference of Michigan (COCM). The COCM represents more than 400 code professionals from around the state who are dedicated to promoting professionalism in building code enforcement.
The organization provides its members with education on proper administration and enforcement of state building codes for the good of the public.
“Fire and police departments are usually the first responders to emergencies, but building inspectors are, in many cases, the first preventers of dangerous situations involving property,” said Taglauer. “The roll of a building official is to try to lessen the impact of an emergency by enforcing codes that could help save a life and property.”
In his new role, Taglauer will work to create a network of colleagues to tap into their varied experiences and knowledge involving the building profession. He will also be responsible for setting up educational seminars for code officials to help them stay current with ever-changing technologies, code changes, and new products that impact the building industry.
COCM’s board is made up of eight building officials from around the state serving an eight-year commitment.
Taglauer joined the COCM in 2005. He is a 10-year member of the City’s Building Department.
