[ARCHIVED] Midland to Present Safe Communities America Results at National Conference

Team Handyman

October 26, 2016 – Kelli Jankens, Injury Prevention Specialist for Trauma Services at MidMichigan Health, will present results from one of Midland’s Safe Communities America initiatives at the national Remembering When™ Conference November 14-16 in San Antonio, Texas. The Remembering When™ program was developed by the National Fire Protection Association and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to help older adults live safely at home as long as possible by addressing 16 key issues related to fall prevention and fire safety.

Last fall, Jankens and a team from the Safe Communities Midland program attended the Remembering When™ Conference to learn how to implement the initiative in their community. Also representing Midland were Trena Winans, Director of Education and Community Outreach for Senior Services and Jim Heading, Fire and Life Safety Educator for Midland Fire Department, the lead agency for this program. This year, Jankens will be on the other side of the podium as she presents Midland’s first-year results to conference attendees.

To date, Heading, Winans, and Jankens have presented the Remembering When™ program to more than 135 Midland residents and have partnered with local volunteers from “Team Handyman” to conduct over 75 home safety inspections and install dozens of grab bars, hand rails, and free smoke alarms in area homes. Midland adopted this program as part of its Safe Communities initiative in 2015.
